Seven Wonders of Today
1. The Taj Mahal, Agra : Taj Mahal Means " Crown Palace " and in fact it is well preserved and architecturally the most beautiful tomb in the world. It is best described by an English Poet; SIR EDWIN ARNOLD that " Taj Mahal is not a peace of architecture, as other buildings are, but the proud passions of an Emperor's love wrought in living stones.
Taj Mahal was built by a Muslim Emperor, Shah Jahan in the loving memory of his wife Begum Mumtaz Mahal. Ustad Isa, a Persian architect is said to be the main planner and designer for this magnificent memorial. Construction was begun in 1631 and it was completed in 1648 at the cost of Rs.32 million. Twenty thousand workers were deployed to work on it. The white marble was quarried at Makarana near Jodhpur in Rajasthan. On full moon nights, the glory of joy seems at its best.
2. Colosseum of Italy ( Rome ): The Colosseum of Italy, was in its original state, a four- story oval amphitheatre with tiers of marble, seating for about 45000 people .Its real name is Tlavian Amphitheatre but it is better known as Colosseum. Gladiatorial combats took place in arena and reputedly, Christians were thrown to lions.
3. Caracol, Chichen Itza: Caracol , at the Mayan site of Chichen Itza, on the Yucatan Peninsula was built in 1050 B.C. the name El Caracol meaning "The snail "in Spanish, refers to the spiral staircase within the building.
4. Machu Picchu : Located about 600m. above the ridge between two peaks and Urubamba river, the ruined city . It was built in 1911, by an American explorer, Hiram Bingham. He believed that Machu Picchu might have been the last refugee of Incas at Cuzco , fleeing away from Spanish invaders but actually nothing is known of its history.
5. Statue of Christ, Brazil : Statue of Christ was built to commemorate Brazil 's hundred years of independence from Portugal . The statue seems to gaze over the city towards the Sugarloaf Mountain .
6. Petra of Jordan : Petra situated in the southern of Jorden was the capital of Nabatae Kingdom and an important trading centre from 400 BC to 200 AD. Nabataens, The Arabian people carved the city into rock 2000 years ago.
7. Great Wall of China : Great Wall Of China was constructed by an emperor Qin She Hugandi. Under later dynasties it became the longest human- made structure on the earth, stretching about 2400km. It was built to deter raids by Nomadic people from North
